The Terminator (1984) - A Brief Summary
The Terminator is a 1984 American science fiction action thriller film directed by James Cameron. The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, a cyborg assassin sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton). Sarah’s unborn son will one day be the savior of mankind, fighting against a hostile artificial intelligence (AI) in a post-apocalyptic future. Michael Biehn plays Kyle Reese, a soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah. The screenplay is credited to Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd, with co-writer William Wisher Jr. also credited for additional dialogue.
Cameron developed the idea for the film after a fever dream he had while in Rome during the release of his first film, Piranha II: The Spawning (1982). He worked on the concept with Wisher and sold the project’s rights to Gale Anne Hurd with the condition that she produce the film if Cameron directed it. Hurd later secured a distribution deal with Orion Pictures, and executive producers John Daly and Derek Gibson of Hemdale Film Corporation helped set up the film’s financing and production.
Initially offered the role of Kyle Reese, Schwarzenegger agreed to play the Terminator after befriending Cameron. Filming took place mostly at night in Los Angeles, and was delayed due to Schwarzenegger’s commitment to Conan the Destroyer (1984). During this time, Cameron also worked on the scripts for Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Aliens (1986). The film's special effects, which included miniatures and stop-motion animation, were designed by Stan Winston and Gene Warren Jr.
Against all odds, The Terminator defied low expectations and topped the U.S. box office for two weeks, grossing $78.3 million against a modest $6.4 million budget. It is now regarded as a classic, launching Cameron’s career and influencing the sci-fi genre for years to come.
